Independent cinema at The Bioscope

With the development of Main Street Life, one of the most exciting property developments in Johannesburg, the chance to build a permanent space became a reality. The Bioscope is the only independent art house and cultural cinema in Johannesburg, and recalls the era of the Astra and Royal Bioscopes.

This intimate 75-seater cinema is open six nights a week with tickets costing R35 and all shows starting at 8pm.
The popcorn machine is ready, and the tickets have been printed. The doors opened on 8 June, with Adi Loveland's film Unhinged: Surviving Joburg.

The aim of the cinema is to increase the diversity of content on South African movie screens and counteract the dominant commercial film industry.

In bringing new films to new audiences, The Bioscope is striving to grow new markets for new films, and is proud to be involved in developing local audiences for locally and internationally produced cinema … as well as playing a part in developing Johannesburg’s quickly regenerating inner city.
