End Street Park looking good

The park has a thoroughfare that connects Doornfontein train station to Noord taxi rank, which operates 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The thoroughfare cuts through the park but does not compromise the safety and security of play field users.

End Street Park’s regeneration evolved out of the Mayoral Inner City Charter Programme and related urban regeneration initiatives. Before the upgrade, the site was mainly used by homeless people as shelter and as a site for separating recyclable waste. Informal traders also frequented the site, using it mainly as a make-shift abattoir. According to local law enforcement agencies, at night the site served as a base of operations for local prostitutes and drug dealers.

The park underwent a six million rand upgrade in the beginning of 2008. The JDA then approached AFHCO seeking assistance with the management and maintenance of the park. AFHCO, which has several buildings nearby, agreed to help and committed to provide cleaners, security guards, CCTV cameras and maintenance.

The park is currently a clean and safe recreational space for inner city kids. Every week-day afternoon and throughout the day on weekends, kids from all over the inner city can be found playing at the park. AFHCO receives endless requests from soccer clubs and community benefit organisations seeking permission to use the park. It’s a good example of sustainable and progressive public space upgrade and post construction maintenance.

AFHCO’s involvement in the upkeep of this investment not only adds value to the city’s asset base but also represents a paradigm shift in business practice. Over the next three years, AFHCO will spend hundreds of thousands on the park for the benefit of the inner city population at large. AFCHO has already spent more than R800 000 on upkeep of the park.

The park is 12,000m² in size and is used by a number of surrounding schools, as well as residents of Berea, Hillbrow and the Inner City. The park is also used to host cultural events fairly regularly.
End Street Park falls within the boundaries of the proposed New Doornfontein City improvement District and will benefit from the CID’s public space sanitisation and security services.
